How to Find Cheap Spring Break Flights

Spring break is a few weeks of very high demand packed into a short window. Booking early, picking the right week and knowing the cheaper destinations makes a real difference to the total.

When spring break prices actually peak

There is no single spring break. Colleges and schools break at different times from late February to mid-April, but demand piles up in the two weeks around the middle of March, when most college breaks overlap, and again around Easter, which falls on 28 March in 2027. Those are the weeks when flights, hotels and rental cars cost the most.

The week before and the week after often cost noticeably less, even for the same route. If your school or employer gives you any choice, picking a quieter week is the biggest single saving, ahead of any booking trick.

How early to book

For spring break, earlier is nearly always better. Aim to book flights two to three months ahead, which for a mid-March trip means December or early January. Hotels in popular beach towns often sell out even sooner.

Set a price alert as soon as you have rough dates, and look at the fares every few days. If a price falls within your budget, book it. Our guides to tracking fare drops and the best time to book flights in 2026 explain how to judge a good price.

Florida, the classic choice

Florida is the default for good reason. Miami and Fort Lauderdale have huge numbers of flights, and Tampa, Orlando, Fort Myers and Jacksonville are well served. The Panhandle beaches around Panama City Beach and Destin are reached through smaller airports such as Panama City and Pensacola, or by flying to Atlanta or Orlando and driving.

Fares to Florida are very sensitive to spring break and to the northeast's school calendar. If you are flexible, check Fort Lauderdale and Orlando as alternatives to Miami, and look at Tampa for the Gulf coast. A rental car makes sense for the Panhandle, but compare the price of flying and the cost of driving from a larger airport.

Spring break outside the US and Mexico

March is cheap for Europe and Central America compared with summer, so a spring break abroad can cost no more than a beach week in Florida. Lisbon, Barcelona and Dublin are mild and cheap to reach in March, and Costa Rica is in the middle of its dry season.

Check passport validity, since many countries require at least six months, and look at entry rules for any extra paperwork. A trip abroad needs more planning, but the cost can be similar if you book early.

Texas, California and the Southwest

South Padre Island and Galveston are classic Texas choices, with Brownsville and Houston as the gateways. San Diego has comfortable weather and easy flights, while Phoenix, Palm Springs and Las Vegas offer sun, golf and pools.

California destinations can be cheaper than they seem outside the peak weeks, and Southwest and budget carriers compete on many routes. Check the airports around San Diego, and consider Las Vegas as a flight hub, since it has many cheap nonstops from across the country.

Mexico and the Caribbean

Cancun, Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, Punta Cana, Nassau and Jamaica are all popular, and all have flights from a large number of US cities. Fares are high in March, but package prices can still be good value for groups. Passports are required for all of them.

Check the State Department's travel advisory for the specific region before you book, since conditions vary. Our guides to cheap flights to Mexico and Punta Cana cover the main options.

City breaks and unusual choices

Spring break is not only about beaches. Nashville, New Orleans, Savannah, Austin and Washington, DC all have festivals and mild weather, and the cherry blossoms in Washington draw crowds in late March and early April.

Hawaii is more expensive, but its shoulder months of April and May are good value. If you are travelling abroad, Europe is much cheaper in March than in summer, and Costa Rica's dry season is at its best. Our guide to Costa Rica flights explains the options.

Search spring break flights

Which days to fly

Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday departures are usually cheaper than Friday and Sunday, and this is more pronounced during spring break. If your group can leave on a Tuesday and come back on a Wednesday, you will often save significantly.

Early morning and late evening flights are often cheaper too. Use a flexible-date calendar to see the whole month, and be ready to adjust. A one-day shift can change the fare by a hundred dollars on a popular route.

A realistic budget for a group of four

Suppose four friends fly to a Florida or Mexican beach for five nights. Flights might cost a few hundred dollars each in peak weeks, a shared room works out at around $100 a night per person in popular spots, and food, drinks and transfers add a similar amount again. The flight is only one slice of the total, which is why picking the cheaper week also lowers the hotel bill.

Write the budget down before anyone books, and agree who pays what. Disagreements about money cause more trouble on group trips than almost anything else, and a shared spreadsheet or app that tracks who owes what makes it simple.

Budget airlines and the real total

Budget carriers advertise very low spring break fares, and for light travelers they can be a bargain. But they charge for carry-ons, checked bags and seat selection, and during spring break those fees add up quickly for a group with luggage.

Compare the total cost, not the base fare. Our guide to budget airlines versus legacy carriers explains how to compare, and the article on carry-on size rules helps you pack to avoid fees.

Travelling with a group

Groups can save money by splitting rooms and rental cars, but flights are harder. Book everyone on the same itinerary where possible, since fares can rise between bookings, and agree on a deadline for decisions.

Airlines have group desks for ten or more travelers, which can hold fares and allow name changes. Our group flight booking tips explain how to handle it, and our group bookings service can handle the arrangements.

Student discounts and youth fares

Discounts for students on US domestic flights are rare, but some airlines and booking sites offer youth or student fares, mostly on international routes. Hotels and rental cars sometimes offer small discounts with a student ID.

Check the details carefully, since student fares may carry restrictions. Our guide to student and youth flight discounts and our page on student discount tickets explain what is available.

Spring break packages: read the small print

Packages that bundle flights, hotels and parties can look cheap, but check what is included and what is not. Some charge extra for transfers, resort fees or drinks, and cancellation terms can be strict.

Be careful with unfamiliar companies, and look for reviews from other travelers. Pay by credit card for added protection, and keep a record of confirmation emails. If a deal looks too good to be true, it often is.

Hotels and rentals: book something refundable

For a trip that is months away, a refundable room is worth a small premium. Prices often drop closer to the date, or you may want to move to a different place, and a refundable rate lets you rebook at no cost.

Vacation rentals can be good value for groups but read the rules carefully, including cleaning fees, noise limits and cancellation terms. Check recent reviews and make sure the property is exactly as described.

Staying safe on a spring break trip

Spring break involves crowds, alcohol and unfamiliar places, and most problems are preventable. Look after your drink, stay with friends, use licensed taxis or rideshares and keep a copy of your passport and ID.

If you are travelling abroad, check the State Department's advisory and register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. Travel insurance with medical cover is sensible, and so is knowing where the nearest hospital is.

Travel insurance and cancellations

Spring break trips often involve prepaid hotels and group bookings, so a cancellation can be costly. Insurance with cancellation cover can protect you against illness, family emergencies and some weather events.

Check what is covered and what is excluded, and buy soon after booking. Our guide to domestic travel insurance explains what to look for.

Driving instead of flying

If your destination is within eight hours, driving may be cheaper for a group, particularly with the cost of bags and the airport transfer. Fuel is shared, and you have a car at the destination.

Check the cost of tolls, parking and wear on the car, and allow for traffic on the busiest days. A road trip is also a good way to travel with a lot of luggage, and for some groups it is part of the fun.

What to pack, and what to leave at home

Pack light, since beach clothes take little space. Bring sunscreen, a hat, a refillable bottle and a small day bag, plus a charger and a power bank. Keep valuables to a minimum, and carry a photocopy or phone photo of your passport.

Leave anything you cannot afford to lose at home, and use the hotel safe for passports and extra cash. If you plan to take drinks or snacks, remember the liquid rules for carry-on bags. Our guide to the TSA liquids rule explains the limits.

Weather, delays and a buffer day

Spring storms can cause delays, particularly in the south and midwest, and airports are crowded. Give yourself an extra buffer on the way home, particularly if you have work or classes the next day.

Check the weather before you travel, use the airline app for updates and keep your documents handy. If your flight is cancelled, rebook straight away. If it happens, delay and cancellation rights tells you where you stand.

Getting through crowded airports

Airports are busiest in the morning and afternoon on peak days. Arrive at least two hours before domestic flights, and earlier if you are travelling with a large group. TSA PreCheck can save time if you have it.

Check the airline's policy on bags and check in online. Keep liquids in line with the rules, and pack a charger. Our guide to the TSA liquids rule explains what you can carry.

A simple booking plan

Pick your dates and a backup week, choose three destinations, and search flights and hotels for all of them. Set price alerts, compare the total with bags, and book the flight when it falls within your budget.

Do not wait for the perfect price, since spring break fares rarely fall in the last month. Book a flexible hotel if possible, and keep a little money in reserve for the trip.
