Cruise pricing moves in two waves — an early "wave season" push (roughly January to March) when lines release their best cabin categories and onboard credit, and a final push a few weeks before sailing when unsold cabins get discounted. Which one works better for you depends on how flexible you are about cabin type and whether you need a specific itinerary locked in months ahead for flights and time off work.

You don't have to book excursions through the cruise line — independent local operators at most ports run the same tours for less, though the ship's own excursions come with a guarantee that if the tour runs late, the ship will wait. For a first cruise or a port with a tight arrival window, that safety net is usually worth the extra cost.

Family-oriented lines put real money into kids' clubs and connecting cabins, while adults-only or smaller ships suit couples and solo travelers looking for quieter itineraries. If you're booking for a mixed group — grandparents, parents, and kids on one trip — cabin location relative to elevators and the pool deck matters more than most people expect, and we'll usually flag that before you pay a deposit.

The cruise fare covers your cabin, meals in the main dining room, and most onboard entertainment, but specialty restaurants, drink packages, WiFi, spa treatments, and gratuities are usually extra and can add up to a third of your total trip cost. Repositioning cruises — when a ship moves between regions at the end of a season, say from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean — tend to have more sea days and noticeably lower fares, since there are fewer short-haul port stops to sell. They're a good fit if you enjoy time on the ship itself and aren't set on a packed port schedule.
