Route Guide

Cheap Flights from San Francisco to Hawaii

It is a six-hour flight across the Pacific with no passport needed. The cost depends on which island, which Bay Area airport and which month you choose.

A short hop across a very big ocean

From the Bay Area, Hawaii is about five and a half to six hours by air, which is less than a flight to New York. It feels like a different country, but it is a domestic trip, so you do not need a passport, only the ID you would use for any US flight. That simplicity is a big reason the route is so popular.

The flip side is that every airline knows how much demand there is. Fares between the Bay Area and the islands rise sharply in the peak weeks, and the cheapest seats go early. Knowing which airport, which island and which weeks to choose is the difference between a reasonable fare and an expensive one.

Four islands, four airports

Honolulu (HNL) on Oahu is the busiest airport and usually has the lowest fares and the most flights. Kahului (OGG) on Maui is the second, with plenty of nonstops. Kona (KOA) and Hilo (ITO) serve the Big Island, and Lihue (LIH) serves Kauai, both with fewer flights and sometimes higher prices.

If you are flexible about where in Hawaii you stay, check all of them. Honolulu is often the cheapest way in, and an inter-island flight of under an hour costs less than people expect. Our Honolulu destination guide explains what Oahu offers and how to organize a first trip.

SFO, Oakland or San Jose?

San Francisco International (SFO) has the widest choice of airlines, including United, Alaska and Hawaiian, but it can be crowded and its fares are not always the lowest. Oakland (OAK) and San Jose (SJC) are smaller, easier airports that are well worth checking, especially for Southwest, which flies from both to several islands.

Compare the total cost, including how you will reach the airport and what you will pay for parking. For East Bay residents, Oakland is often the obvious choice, and for the South Bay, San Jose is. Our SFO airport guide explains how to reach the airport and what to expect.

Flight times and the time difference

Flights from San Francisco to Honolulu take around five and three-quarter hours, and slightly longer to Maui, Kona and Kauai. The return is a little shorter, thanks to tailwinds. Hawaii does not use daylight saving time, so the difference is three hours behind California in summer and two hours in winter.

Morning departures arrive in the early afternoon, which makes for a good first day. Many travelers like the overnight return, which leaves in the evening and lands in the early morning in California, though it leaves you tired. Plan your first and last days accordingly.

The airlines that fly it

United, Alaska, Hawaiian, Southwest and, on some routes, Delta and American all fly between the Bay Area and the islands. Hawaiian Airlines is now part of the Alaska Air Group, and the two brands have been combining their networks, so check what is on offer from each.

Competition on this route is strong, which helps prices, and it also means there are lots of fare types to compare. Check the baggage rules and the seat policy, since they vary a lot. Our guide to Alaska Airlines explains how the airline and its partners connect to the islands.

Which months are cheapest

The lowest fares are usually in late April to early June and from September to the middle of December, excluding Thanksgiving. Those periods have good weather, fewer crowds and lower hotel prices.

The most expensive weeks are from mid-December to the end of March, when northern winters send visitors to the islands and whale watching peaks, and the summer months from mid-June to August, when families travel. Spring break and holidays such as Presidents' Day and Memorial Day add further spikes.

What winter brings: whales and bigger waves

From December to April, humpback whales migrate to Hawaiian waters, and Maui in particular is one of the best places in the world to see them, often from the beach. It is also the season for big surf on Oahu's North Shore, with world-class competitions.

That is the main reason winter is the most expensive time to visit. If whales matter to you, February is typically the peak, and booking early for those weeks is wise. If you prefer calmer seas and cheaper flights, the shoulder months of May and September are a good compromise.

When to book Hawaii flights

For peak weeks, book four to six months ahead, since the best fares are gone by then. For shoulder and low seasons, two to three months is usually enough, and sales appear regularly.

Set a price alert and watch the route for a couple of weeks. How alerts work, and when fares tend to dip, is covered in tracking fare drops and the best time to book flights in 2026. If you find a fair fare on a nonstop for your dates, take it.

Island hopping, and which islands to combine

Inter-island flights are short, about 40 minutes to an hour, and run frequently on Hawaiian Airlines and Southwest, with regional carriers on smaller routes. Two islands in a ten-day trip is a comfortable pace, and three is ambitious.

A popular pairing is Oahu and Maui, combining Honolulu's beaches and history with Maui's coast and Haleakala. Kauai and the Big Island suit nature lovers, with waterfalls, hiking and volcanoes. An open-jaw ticket, flying into one island and home from another, saves backtracking. Our guide to multi-city versus round-trip tickets explains how.

Rental cars, and whether you need one

Oahu can be done without a car if you stay in Waikiki, using buses, rideshares and tours. On Maui, the Big Island and Kauai, a car is almost essential, since the best sights are spread out.

Hawaii rental cars are expensive and sell out in peak season, so book as early as you can. Check the cancellation policy, since you can often rebook if the price falls. Our car rental service can compare options for you.

What has changed on Maui

The wildfires in August 2023 devastated Lahaina on West Maui, and the town is still rebuilding. Other parts of Maui, including Wailea, Kihei and Upcountry, have welcomed visitors back, and tourism is an important part of the island's recovery.

If you visit, be respectful, avoid sightseeing in affected areas, and support local businesses. Check the Maui visitors' bureau and local news for current guidance before you go, since the situation continues to evolve.

Agricultural inspection and what you cannot pack

Hawaii protects its ecosystems with strict rules on bringing in fresh fruit, plants, soil and some animals. Flights from California to Hawaii involve an agricultural declaration, and bags can be inspected.

If you plan to bring food, check the list of restricted items, and leave plants and fresh produce at home. Declare anything doubtful. Also note that Hawaii bans sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate, so choose a mineral, reef-safe product.

Bags and fares

Fares on the Bay Area to Hawaii route vary a lot in what they include. Some cheaper fares do not include a checked bag, and basic fares may restrict seat selection and changes. Southwest's policies have also changed, so check the current rules.

If you are going for a week or more, you will probably want a bag, so compare fares including bags. Our comparison of basic and standard economy explains what changes between fare types.

What a week in Hawaii costs on the ground

Hawaii is expensive. Hotels, resort fees, rental cars and restaurant meals all cost more than on the mainland, because most goods are shipped in. Resort fees of $30 to $50 a night are common at larger hotels and are usually added to the quoted price.

You can save by staying in condos or vacation rentals with kitchens, shopping at local markets and food trucks, and choosing free activities such as beaches and hikes. If the flight is cheaper in a shoulder month, the savings usually extend to hotels and cars too.

Making the long flight comfortable

Six hours is long enough to feel it. Bring a charged phone or tablet with downloaded shows, a refillable water bottle, a light layer and snacks. Choose an aisle seat if you want to move around, or a window if you hope to sleep.

Check whether Wi-Fi is available and what it costs. Our guide to in-flight Wi-Fi compares airlines, and our guide to long-haul flight comfort offers more tips.

Honeymoons, families and groups

Hawaii is a classic honeymoon and family destination. Couples often pair a quiet resort on Maui or Kauai with a few days in Honolulu, and families gravitate to Oahu for its beaches and easy access. Groups can find vacation rentals that are good value.

Our honeymoon travel service, family vacations service and group travel service can help plan the rest of the trip, from hotels to activities.

What to pack

Pack light, quick-drying clothes, a swimsuit, a rain jacket for windward sides and a warm layer if you plan to visit Haleakala or Mauna Kea at sunrise or night, where it is cold. Sturdy shoes are useful for hiking, and reef-safe sunscreen is a must.

Bring a refillable water bottle, a dry bag for beach days and a small first-aid kit. Leave space in your luggage for souvenirs, though note that some food items from Hawaii may need to be declared on your way back to California.

Visitors from overseas flying through San Francisco

If you are travelling from outside the US and connecting at SFO to Hawaii, you must first clear US immigration and customs at your first point of entry, collect your bags and recheck them, before boarding the flight to the islands. Allow at least three hours between flights.

You will need the right entry paperwork for the US, such as a visa or an approved ESTA, even if the final destination is Hawaii. Once you land in Hawaii, there is no further immigration check. Our guide to transit visa rules explains the process.

Weather, hurricanes and volcanoes

Hawaii's weather is mild all year, with a drier summer and a wetter winter on the windward sides. Hurricane season runs from June to November, though direct hits are rare. Flight disruptions are possible but not common.

On the Big Island, volcanic activity at Kilauea varies, and the national park occasionally closes areas. Check conditions before you go. Travel insurance can protect you against cancellations from storms or other events.

A ten-day plan for first-timers

Spend four nights on Oahu for Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, the North Shore and a hike up Diamond Head, then fly to Maui for five nights for the Road to Hana, Haleakala sunrise and snorkelling. Use the last night near the airport before heading home.

If you prefer something quieter, choose Kauai and the Big Island instead, with hiking, waterfalls and star gazing at Mauna Kea. Whichever you choose, leave unscheduled time, since the real joy of Hawaii is in slowing down.
