Route Guide

Cheap Flights from Los Angeles to Las Vegas

It is a one-hour flight with five possible departure airports. The trick is knowing when flying saves money and when a car, a bus or a different airport does the job better.

Fly, drive or take the bus?

Los Angeles to Las Vegas is one of the shortest busy air routes in the country, around an hour in the air. It is also a drive of roughly four to five hours when the traffic on the I-15 behaves, and a much longer one when it does not. On Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings the road can double that time.

Flying makes sense when you are travelling alone, want to avoid the Sunday crawl, or when the fare is low enough that fuel and parking would cost more. Driving makes sense for groups of three or four. A high-speed rail link, Brightline West, is being built between the two cities but is not yet open, so for now the choice is plane, car or coach.

Five airports, one destination

Southern California is unusual because you can fly to Las Vegas from five commercial airports, and the cheapest one varies with the weekend. LAX is the biggest and has the widest range of airlines, but it is also the most congested.

Burbank (BUR) is small, quick and easy, and usually the most pleasant way out for the San Fernando Valley and the north of the city. Long Beach (LGB) suits the South Bay. Orange County (SNA) covers the south and Orange County. Ontario (ONT) serves the Inland Empire and has easy parking.

Check all five and look at the cost of getting there. A $30 saving by flying from Ontario is no help if you live in Santa Monica and spend two hours in traffic. Our LAX airport guide covers terminals and transport.

Landing in Las Vegas

Harry Reid International (LAS) is about five miles from the Strip and has a very easy road into the resorts. Taxis and rideshares usually take 15 to 25 minutes depending on traffic, and rideshare pickup is in a dedicated area, so follow the signs rather than the crowd.

Terminal 3 handles most international and many domestic flights, while Terminal 1 handles most others, so check yours before you travel. Allow a bit longer than you would expect on the way back, since security lines at the airport can be long on Sunday afternoons.

Which airlines fly the route

Southwest has a big presence out of the Los Angeles area, and American, Delta, United, Alaska, JetBlue and a number of budget carriers fly it from at least one airport. Frequency is high, with flights across the day, so you can usually find a time that works.

Because competition is intense, one-way fares are often cheaper than people expect, and mixing airlines on the way out and back is easy. Budget airlines can look cheap, but charge for bags and seats, so compare the total. Our guide to budget airlines and legacy carriers explains how.

Weekends, events and the Vegas calendar

Vegas prices follow the event calendar more than the seasons. Big conventions such as CES in January, major boxing and UFC nights, the Las Vegas Grand Prix in November, music festivals, New Year's Eve and holiday weekends can double hotel prices and push flights up with them.

If your dates are flexible, check what is on before you pick them. Midweek, Sunday to Thursday, is almost always cheaper for both flights and hotels than Friday and Saturday. Summer is extremely hot, with daytime highs often above 105 degrees, and fares and rooms can be good value as a result.

What has changed with Southwest

For years, Southwest was the easy answer on this route because of its free checked bags and open seating. That has changed. The airline now charges for checked bags on many fares and is moving to assigned seating, and rules differ by fare type and by when you booked.

Check the current policy on the fare you are buying instead of relying on what you remember. Southwest's lowest fares can still be good value, but the old assumption that bags are free no longer holds, and it is one reason comparing the total price has become more important.

The cheapest days and times

Tuesday and Wednesday are usually the cheapest days to fly, with Thursday and Sunday departures the most expensive for the return. Early morning and late evening flights are often cheaper than the middle of the day.

A one-way pair can also beat a round trip, for example flying out on Thursday evening on one airline and back on a Monday morning flight on another. Use the flexible-date calendar on a search engine, because a one-day change can make a surprising difference on a route with this many seats.

When to book

This is a route where last-minute fares are often fine because there are so many flights. Two to four weeks ahead is a good general target, and event weekends are an exception, so book those six to eight weeks ahead.

Set a price alert to see how fares behave. Our guides to tracking fare drops and last-minute flight deals explain how to judge a good price, and the best time to book flights in 2026 covers the wider picture.

Carry-on, bags and the short-flight trap

On a one-hour flight, a bag fee can easily equal the fare. A budget airline's cheapest ticket usually includes only a small personal item, and a carry-on or checked bag adds a lot. If you plan to bring luggage, price the full trip before comparing.

Many visitors travel light for a weekend, and a backpack that fits under the seat can save you around fifty dollars each way. Our guide to carry-on size rules explains the limits, and the one on basic and standard economy fares helps you pick the right fare class.

Is first class worth it for an hour?

Almost never at full price. The flight is so short that service is limited, though you get a wider seat and priority boarding. If you have status or points and an upgrade is cheap, it can be a pleasant extra.

A better use of money is often a seat with extra legroom for the way back on a Sunday, or paying for a checked bag if you have bought something. Our guide to extra legroom seats explains when they are worth it.

Bachelor parties, conventions and groups

A large share of weekend traffic on this route is groups, from bachelor and bachelorette parties to conventions and sports weekends. If you are organizing one, book flights as early as you can, since seats at a good price run out quickly on Friday and Sunday.

Groups of ten or more can often get special handling through an airline's group desk, which allows names to be added later and sometimes holds a fare. Our group flight booking tips explain how it works, and our group bookings service can handle the arrangements.

Getting to the airport in Los Angeles

LAX has a rideshare pickup lot outside the terminals, reached by a free shuttle, and the LAX-it system manages pickups. Allow extra time during rush hours, and consider the FlyAway bus from Van Nuys or Union Station if you do not want to drive.

Burbank has a Metrolink station next to the terminal, and Long Beach and Orange County have easy parking and short walks to the gate. Ontario also has convenient parking. For a short trip, pick the airport that gets you from your front door to the gate with the least hassle.

What to do about the heat and the crowds

Las Vegas in summer is extreme, and arriving mid-afternoon can mean walking into 110-degree weather. Plan outdoor activities for early morning or evening, drink plenty of water and use the indoor walkways between resorts.

Weekend crowds are thickest on Friday and Saturday evenings, and check-in lines can be long. Many hotels let you check in on a phone app, which saves time. Book restaurants and shows before you go for the busiest weekends.

Mistakes that cost people money on this route

The classic one is comparing only the fare and ignoring bags, which turns a $39 ticket into a $120 one on the way back. The second is booking a flight from an airport that is far from home to save a small amount, then paying more in rideshare and lost time.

A few more to avoid: ignoring the resort fee when comparing hotels, forgetting that a Sunday evening return is the most expensive and slowest part of the trip, and booking a very tight return the day after a late night. Leave a margin and check the full price before you commit.

Hotel packages and resort fees

Almost every major Las Vegas hotel charges a daily resort fee on top of the room rate, often $30 to $50 or more, and it is included in the final total at checkout rather than in the first price you see. Include it when comparing prices.

Some packages that combine flights and a hotel can be good value in off-peak weeks, particularly midweek. Check what is included and what is not, and compare with booking separately. Our vacation packages service can help.

Day trips and extending the trip

If you have more than a weekend, consider a day trip to the Hoover Dam, Red Rock Canyon, the Valley of Fire or the Grand Canyon West rim. Each is within a couple of hours, and rental cars are often cheaper in Las Vegas than in Los Angeles.

For a longer trip, you can fly out of Las Vegas and drive back, or the reverse, with a one-way car rental. Some companies charge a hefty drop-off fee, so compare. Our car rental service can help with the arrangements.

Parking, pickup and getting home

If you fly out of Burbank, Long Beach, Orange County or Ontario, parking is usually simple and cheaper than at LAX, and short-term lots are close to the terminals. At LAX, off-site parking with shuttles can be far cheaper than the terminal lots, and the FlyAway buses are a good alternative.

On the way home, remember that Las Vegas airport security can be slow on Sunday afternoons and evenings, so arrive earlier than you think. If you are driving home from LA's airport after midnight, check the traffic before you leave, since road works often close lanes at night.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions travelers ask before booking.

How long is the flight from Los Angeles to Las Vegas?

About an hour in the air, or around two hours door to airport door once you include getting to the airport and security. Driving takes roughly four to five hours without traffic.

Which Los Angeles airport is cheapest for Las Vegas?

It changes by week. Burbank, Long Beach, Orange County and Ontario are worth checking alongside LAX, and the cheapest one is only a bargain if it is also easy for you to reach.

Is it cheaper to fly or drive from LA to Las Vegas?

For one traveler, flying is often cheaper than fuel, parking and the hassle of weekend traffic. For three or four people sharing a car, driving usually wins.

What is the cheapest day to fly to Las Vegas?

Tuesday and Wednesday are generally the cheapest, and Friday and Sunday are the most expensive, especially around events.

How far ahead should I book?

Two to four weeks is usually fine on this busy route. For event weekends, holidays and conventions, book six to eight weeks ahead.

Do flights include a carry-on bag?

Network airlines usually include a carry-on in main cabin fares. Budget airlines usually do not, and bag fees can be as high as the fare on a one-hour flight.

Is there a train from Los Angeles to Las Vegas?

Not yet. A high-speed rail link, Brightline West, is under construction, but it is not open, so the options are flying, driving or taking a coach.

Are Las Vegas resort fees included in hotel prices?

Often not in the first price you see. Most big resorts add a daily fee at checkout, so compare the total, not the advertised rate.

When are Las Vegas flights most expensive?

Around big conventions, major sports events, the Grand Prix in November, New Year's Eve and holiday weekends. Midweek stays outside those periods are much cheaper.

Is first class worth it from LAX to Las Vegas?

Rarely, at full price, since the flight is about an hour. It can make sense if you have an upgrade or points, or a very low first-class fare.
