Route Guide

Cheap Flights from Boston to Orlando

It is one of New England's favorite winter escapes and a standing family tradition for school vacation weeks. Here is how to find a good fare without wasting your holiday on a bad flight.

A route built on school vacations

Boston to Orlando runs on the school calendar. Massachusetts February vacation, the week of April vacation around Patriots' Day, and the Christmas weeks send thousands of families south, and fares follow them. Outside those weeks, the route is much cheaper and calmer.

If you have any freedom with dates, that is the single biggest lever. Shifting a trip by one week to avoid a vacation period can save hundreds of dollars for a family of four, and Orlando is no less fun in the weeks around the school breaks.

Flying out of Boston Logan

Logan has four terminals, and JetBlue, which has its main New England base here, uses Terminal C. Delta uses Terminal A, and American and others use Terminal B, so check yours. The airport is only a few miles from downtown and linked to the Silver Line bus and the Blue Line subway, which makes it easy to reach without a car.

Logan can be busy and its security lines grow at peak times, so allow extra time before an early morning flight. Our Boston Logan airport guide explains the layout and how to get there.

Other New England airports to try

Providence (PVD) and Manchester, New Hampshire (MHT) are small, easy airports that often have competitive fares to Florida, especially from budget carriers. Hartford's Bradley (BDL) and Worcester (ORH) are alternatives too, depending on where you live.

If one of them is within an hour of home, check it every time. The savings can pay for parking and then some, and the airports are far quieter than Logan, which is a real benefit when you are travelling with children.

Arriving in Orlando

Orlando International (MCO) is the main airport for the area, about 15 miles from Disney World and a bit further from Universal. It has a modern layout, with a train connecting the gates to the main terminal, and the Brightline station at the airport links to Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

For Disney, the old Magical Express bus service ended in 2022, and today most visitors use rideshares, private transfers or a rental car. If you are staying on site, check what your resort offers. Orlando Sanford (SFB) is a smaller alternative north of the city, mostly for budget flights, and it adds about 40 minutes of driving.

Flight time and the time zone

A nonstop flight from Boston to Orlando takes roughly three hours, a little less on the way back, and both are in the Eastern time zone. A morning departure gets you to Orlando in time for lunch and the pool, which is exactly why those are the most popular flights.

Afternoon and evening flights can be cheaper, and they are worth considering with a family if you do not want to rush in the morning. Summer thunderstorms often delay afternoon flights, so a morning departure is the safer choice during that season.

Which months cost what

February, April and the Christmas period are the most expensive, followed by spring break in March and the busy summer months. The cheapest times are usually late August to early November, when children are back at school, and January after the holidays.

Be careful with hurricane season, which runs from June to November and peaks in late summer and early autumn. Cheap fares in September come with some weather risk, so buy flexible tickets or consider travel insurance, and watch the forecast as your trip approaches.

How a vacation week changes the bill

Take a family of four. In a quiet week in early November, a nonstop round trip might cost a few hundred dollars per person, and a hotel near the parks might cost half its peak rate. In February vacation, the same trip can cost significantly more for every part, from flights to hotels to rental cars.

These figures vary, but the pattern is reliable. If you must travel in a vacation week, book as early as you can and choose midweek departures. If you can move, the week before or after often saves enough to pay for an extra day of the trip.

The airlines on the route

JetBlue is the biggest carrier on the route, with a large number of daily flights, and it competes with Delta, American, Southwest, Frontier and a few other budget airlines on different days. That competition keeps fares among the lowest in the country, particularly outside vacation weeks.

Check the baggage rules, since they change by fare type and airline. JetBlue's cheapest fares have restrictions, and budget airlines charge extra for bags and seats. Our guide to budget airlines versus legacy carriers explains how to compare.

Bags, strollers and car seats

Families with young children should check the baggage rules for strollers and car seats. Most airlines allow them as free checked items, and some let you take a stroller to the gate. A car seat is safest on the plane in its own seat, if it is approved for aircraft use.

If you are hiring a car in Orlando, book child seats ahead or consider bringing your own, since rental seats can be expensive. Our guide to travelling with a lap infant sets out the rules for the youngest passengers.

When to book

For vacation weeks, book at least two to three months ahead, since the best fares go quickly. For ordinary weeks, four to eight weeks ahead is usually fine.

Set a price alert and check the route a few times a week. Two of our guides go deeper: tracking fare drops and the best time to book flights in 2026. If you see a good nonstop fare for a vacation week, book it, since those rarely come back.

Mistakes that make this trip cost more

The most common is booking vacation week at the last minute and paying the premium. The second is choosing a flight that lands late on the first night, so that a family arrives at a hotel at midnight with tired children and no dinner.

Also common: forgetting to price the bags, ignoring the cost of theme park parking and resort fees, and assuming that the cheapest flight is the cheapest trip. A slightly more expensive nonstop at a sensible hour often saves money elsewhere.

The cheapest days to fly

Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday departures are usually the lowest, while Friday and Sunday are the busiest. The pattern is stronger during vacation weeks, so if your trip is flexible, start midweek and come back midweek.

Check the return carefully, since a Sunday evening flight is often the most expensive and the slowest to board. A Monday morning return, or even leaving on Saturday, can cut the fare. Use a flexible-date calendar to see the full month at a glance.

Theme park tickets and trip planning

Park tickets, hotel prices and flight fares all peak at the same times, so a trip in a quieter week saves on all three. Multi-day passes cost less per day, and some parks have discounts when booked ahead.

Do not forget that parks have different opening hours and crowd patterns, and that popular rides fill quickly. Our family vacations service can help plan a trip that combines flights, hotels and tickets in one place.

Rental cars, tolls and the Orlando road system

A rental car gives you freedom, but Orlando's highways have electronic tolls, and rental companies charge a daily fee for their transponders. Ask how it works before you drive off, since unpaid tolls can lead to fines.

For many families staying near the parks, rideshares and shuttles are enough, and parking at the parks is expensive. If you plan day trips to the coast or Kennedy Space Center, a car makes sense. Our car rental service can help compare options.

Beyond the parks

Central Florida has more than theme parks. Cocoa Beach and Kennedy Space Center are about an hour east, Clearwater and Tampa are about 90 minutes west, and the springs around Orlando are good for a day out.

If you are travelling without children, Orlando also makes a good base for a Florida road trip. A one-way rental car to Miami or Tampa is sometimes affordable, and a car gives you access to beaches and nature that you cannot reach by rideshare.

Cruises from Port Canaveral

Port Canaveral, about 45 minutes from Orlando International, is the second busiest cruise port in the world, and many passengers fly into Orlando and transfer by shuttle or rideshare. Fly in the day before your sailing, since a delay on the day can mean missing the ship.

Cruise lines sell transfers, and independent shuttles are often cheaper. Check your sailing time and allow plenty of margin, particularly in summer when thunderstorms cause delays.

Package or flights only?

Flight-and-hotel packages can be a good value in quiet weeks, particularly when theme park tickets are included. In vacation weeks, they sometimes cost more than booking separately because the airline and hotel prices are both high.

Compare the two, and check what is included and what is not, such as baggage, transfers and resort fees. Our vacation packages service can price both for you.

Getting through the airport

Logan's busiest times are early morning and Sunday afternoons, and security lines are long. TSA PreCheck can make a big difference, and CLEAR is also worth a look if you fly often.

Our guide to TSA PreCheck, Global Entry and CLEAR explains which is worth having. If you are travelling with children, allow extra time and check the airline's policy on strollers, bottles and snacks.

Going without children

Orlando is not just for families. Couples and friends use the city for golf, spa weekends and food, and the Universal and Disney parks are enjoyable for adults, particularly on weekdays outside vacation weeks.

If you are travelling as a couple, shoulder season, with fewer crowds and lower prices, is usually the best choice, and an evening flight or a late checkout can add relaxed hours at either end.

Weather and delays

Boston's winter storms and Florida's summer thunderstorms are the two main causes of delays on this route. If you have a flight in February, check the forecast and be ready to rebook, and in summer, choose a morning flight.

If a flight is cancelled, use the airline's app to rebook straight away, since seats on a popular route fill quickly. For the details of what to claim, see delay and cancellation rights.

Travel insurance for a family trip

A family holiday involves a lot of prepaid costs, including park tickets and hotels, and an illness or a storm can ruin plans. Travel insurance can cover cancellations and medical issues, and some policies include cover for hurricanes.

Read the exclusions carefully, and buy soon after you book. Our guide to domestic travel insurance explains what to look for.
