Krakow's Main Market Square is one of the largest medieval town squares in Europe, and unlike many Western European historic centers, it survived World War II largely intact, giving the entire old town an authenticity that's increasingly rare at this price point.
The best time to visit is May-June or September, when temperatures are comfortable and the city hasn't yet hit peak summer crowds; July-August brings the warmest weather but also the highest hotel rates and busiest streets.
Beyond the old town, Kazimierz — the historic Jewish quarter — has become one of the city's most interesting neighborhoods, with a growing food and nightlife scene layered over deep historical significance, worth at least a half-day separate from the main square.
